Mr Lidetu’s Court hearing on 21 Oct/20
Mr Lidetu Ayalew, one of EDP’s founder and longest-serving leadership, appeared before East Shewa High Court today. On its last hearing on 19 Oct/20, the Court ruled on two matters. Namely,
- On the first issue, Commander Tariku Legesse from Bishoftu Police who attended the Court was ordered to release Mr Lidetu immediately on bail. The Court also stressed that If the Commander fails to execute the order, the Court will take legal action on him.
- On the second matter, the Oromia Police Commission was ordered to appear before the Court today and account why it defied the Court’s order by not releasing Lidetu.
Lidetu explained to the Court that a police officer approached him at his cell and informed him – “we released you on 20th September, however as soon as we released you, we rearrested you to charge you with a new case”. But Lidetu said to the Court the police never released him, not even for one second.
Mr Lidetu stressed to the Court: that the Court’s time is being wasted on this amateurish drama even though the judges had done all they could. He also added that it is a total disrespect to the justice system, and he now wants the judges to move on and consider other issues instead.
The presiding judge deliberated that the police is not only in breach of the law but also the constitution.
The Court was adjourned after the judge instructed police to attend the Court tomorrow with written confirmation that Mr Lidetu is released.
Mr Lidetu was arrested on 24 July 2020 and has been in police custody for the last 89 days. So far he appeared before Bishoftu Woreda Court 5 times, at East Shewa High Court 9 times and at Oromia Highest Court 4 times.
It is for the 5th time that the Court is ordering the Police to release Lidetu on bail. Despite that, the Police has kept ignoring the Court order and never released Lidetu.
